No Second Place;

Engineering and Design for the America’s Cup

Conisbee, 1-5 Offord St, London, N1 1DH

The Americas Cup has always been at the forefront of sailing yacht design and technology. In a competition where it was once said 'There is no second place', designers and engineers need to optimise structures operating in an unpredictable and complex environment.

Modern Americas Cup yachts continue the 175 year tradition of pushing the design envelope. The boats are now foiling monohulls which compete by match racing boat on boat. A platform of carbon fibre supports 4m wide foils that lift the yacht out of the water. The yachts have a 26m tall mast carrying sails that provide the power to reach speeds of over 100 km/ hour during racing.

Mark Hobbs will take you on his journey in his childhood dream job of working on a British Americas Cup challenge, from design, testing, optimising and build of the yacht through commissioning, development and then racing for the 37th Americas cup in 2024.
